One Week Till Deadline

Pilot #70 just registered (see http://thewillixc.com/pilotinfo/pilots/). Only 30 spots left!! If you’re not in yet, what are you waiting for? Early Registration cut-off is next Monday. Get signed up and paid so you are included in the draw.

In the next few weeks we will start the second phase of registration to get everyone set up for SPOT tracking and XC List scoring. All registered will get the instructions via email. Doing this pre-comp means more time for having fun when we get there.

And it is going to be fun!

HG Super Sledder Award

Not long ago we announced a new award for PG Novices, the “Super Sledder”, a contest for newbies only.

(Drum rollllllllll) THERE’S A SUPER SLEDDER FOR HGs TOO. We didn’t want to leave our stiffie pilot friends out, so we will also have a prize for the HG pilot completing the greatest number of flights from launch to Muller Flight Park, with no XC points claimed, and a bonus-worthy landing (on your feet, no aluminum touching or broken, and safe, as adjudicated by the throngs watching every landing). The contest will start at noon, Saturday, July 25 (after the morning Pilot’s Meeting) and end at 3:00 PM, Sunday, Aug 2.

Trust us – the prizes are worth working for. Set your alarms, cushion your bladders and don your dust masks pilots and drivers. These new awards are also sure to turn the LZ into a much better spot for spectators.

Early Registration Deadline Coming Up!

Hey all, a gentle reminder that we’re just 13 days away from the June 15 deadline for early registration. You can save yourself $20 by registering and paying early. And, more important, you’ll have one of the just 100 spots available and be entered in the Early Registration draw for dinner while you’re in Golden.

Here are just a few other enticements as finalized at our big team meeting last night…

  • The Muller BBQ will happen Saturday evening, July 25, featuring homemade sausage (thanks Glen) and kegs of “Rutting Elk Red” (thanks Vincene, John, Dale and Randy).
  • The Pilot Bags for each competitor are logoed this year and look great. They will be stuffed with the famous Willi Buff, all kinds of helpful items, and the inevitable paper work to keep you out of the doghouse with the organizers and landowners.
  • Our sponsors are really winding up, so you can expect Morning Meeting and Dinner Raffle prizes that include a hiking harness, varios, wind meters, T-shirts, gift certificates, etc.
  • The Breakfast Ladies are raring to go with even nicer breakfasts, a lunch bag program, and the big buffet to end it all off.
  • Many ways to win, with the new “Super Sledder” Award (most landings at the LZ) joining returning favorites the “Willi Make It” (you don’t want to win this one) and “Spot, Spot, Where’s the F****G Spot”.

All this, and the best flying you will do all year. What’s the hold up – sign up! 56 pilots already have.

Missed a Big One

Whoops, missed a big one for the long flights post today. Hugo again, this time with Steven Semisch, flew near 173 kms west past Revelstoke from Mt 7. We don’t usually go that way, so this one is worth taking a look at. In the last week, the Mara-Revelstoke-Golden corridor has been going off. Two days earlier, Richard Bruneau did Mara to Revelstoke for 90 kms.

HGs haven’t been as lucky from Golden yet, with onlty Serge posting a nice flight. But, congrats to the pilots of both types who nailed big flights during Miles in May on the prairie. The season is on!

Check out the flight by Steven and Hugo here…

New PG Prize: Most Sledders!

Mentioning those big flights in our last post reminded us that not everyone is ready for XC. Have no fear – the Willi is a comp for everyone. To that end, and thanks to a generous donation of a great prize from Muller Windsports, we’d like to announce our newest “specialty” prize: Most Sledders!

This is a contest for newbies only, and will be won by the pilot in the PG Novice category completing the greatest number of flights from launch to Muller Flight Park, with no XC points claimed, and a bonus-worthy landing (on your feet and safe, as adjudicated by the throngs watching every landing). The contest will start at noon, Saturday, July 25 (after the morning Pilot’s Meeting) and end at 3:00 PM, Sunday, Aug 2.

Set your alarms, cushion your bladders and don your dust masks – this could be the most hotly contested prize of the week. Don’t worry HGs, we’re working on a similarly demented challenge for you too.

Big Flights from Mt 7

The XC season is heating up in the mountains in and around Golden. Scott Watwood (Golden site guy and tandem pilot) completed a 117 km FAI triangle from the low launch on Mt 7. Not to be outdone, Hugo (tandem pilot and all-round good guy) did a 213 km nearly completed O&R with Swansea as the TP. Both have added other big flights. Ivo Beshinski has also cracked the 100km mark from Mt 7 recently. Check out their flights at…

By the way, 55 pilots registered.

50 Pilots Registered – In May!

Hey folks, we just hit 50 pilots registered for the Willi! Besides the usual attendees from Calgary and BC, we have pilots joining us from Ontario, all over the US (Oregon, Alaska, California, Montana, Utah, Florida) and Belgium. This is going to be fun! Sign up now if you want a spot. Remember, only 100 pilots will be registered.

Highlighted Sponsor: Muller Windsports

The Willi wouldn’t be possible without our wonderful sponsors. We want to recognize their contributions. Please thank them with us.

First up: Muller Windsports! The Muller family have supported the Willi since its inception. Willi in fact was the first winner. Vincene and Keith generously donate their time and business resources in the background every year, along with numerous pilot awards. This year they are providing the pilot bags each competitor will receive at registration. Also, Vincene has partnered with Anatoly Cohn of APCO Aviation to donate a Hike Mountain Harness for a lucky winner in the comp.

Please thank them for their generosity with your business at http://mullerwindsports.com/

Willi Buff 2015

Those who have attended the Willi last few years will be familiar with the popular Willi Buff. This year’s design is in production and will be in the bag for every registered pilot (up to 100). 46 pilots are registered and ready to get theirs. Sign up and you can have one too.

Thanks to Leif Hanson for design, and Dannie Wolf for colour and rendering.

Leif Kills It with 2015 Logo!

Our resident artist, Leif Hanson, has once again delivered a killer logo for the Willi. Registered pilots can expect to see it emblazoned on our unique Willi Bags and Buffs, provided to everyone who registers.

And by the way, we’re about to pass 40 registered pilots!
